Other than years of mountain guiding during college, my entry to self-employment began by using a DBA of "jolSimulTasker" since I anticipated being so confused working for several clients at once that complete attention to their detail each would require me to simulate a multi-tasking computer.
My wife suggested I was just simulating doing something useful until a BIG client or salaried job came along.
The clients trickled in slowly, with intermittant problems - and sure enough sometimes I'd have 3 solutions to find at once; more often none. Anyway I could not get client's Accounts Payable to appreciate jolSimulTasker as my tradename, but they didn't baulk at an acronym like OTG. Another firm had that web domain name, so I became O-T-G , O'Laughlin Technologies Group, www.o-t-g.com
The software necessary to my various clients' needs has included optimizing graphics files in Adobe Image Ready, familiarity with PhotoShop; Visio, html, communication programs, web cams, dBase III and Access database, spreadsheets, text analysis with Zoot and Umap, desktop publishing, MS Word, Word Perfect and OCR of .pdf screen captures. I have tried and discarded many antivirus programs, for the moment settling on Sophos in the "peer cloud" of mixed WIN 95, 98, and 2000 workstations.
A synopsis of several important clients follows:
VanEd On-line Real Estate School Niwot, CO
I created content and applied ColdFusion style tags for their website. I composed real estate exam questions with a range of answers, then ftp'd information chunks directly to an Access database on the client's server.
The Taj restaurant, Boulder, CO
I continue to advise, demonstrate, monitor and correct computer software usage, including virus cleansing and optimizing internet use - even video surveilance security web-casting for this purveyor of sub-continental cuisine.
Greenlee, Winner and Sullivan P.C. Boulder, CO
I created a 260 page website for this patent law firm, then was able to pare it down to about 85 necessary pages. The reduction techniques may shortly become economically important in real savings of ISP storage charges. I maintain the site, adding CV pages for new employees and updating and indexing the text base of successfully issued patents. I convert their Powerpoint presentations to web content with lecture notes appended to the main slides. Formerly I wrote macros shoe-horning the output of their time billing program into an otherwise incompatible invoicing procedure. Currently novel attacks over the internet require repeated vigilence to keep viruses out of their networked computers.
Bargain Storage
With this early client I explored the feasibility of computerizing a storage unit monthly rental business. dBase III programming produced a working DOS environment menu controlled system, but then he bought a Windows competent computer and went to Quick Books hoping for simplicity.
